Solar energy generation infrastructure is often at odds with agricultural production as they compete for the same land space. Agrivoltaic farming, which involves growing plants underneath solar panels, provided a viable solution for rural farmers in Guangdong province, China. Across four agricultural sites in Dabu County, Meizhou City, there was potential to maximise land efficiency to produce clean energy and fresh vegetables.
To generate green electricity on prime agricultural land, SP Group invested in its first batch of agrivoltaic assets in Guangdong, which were installed by end-2023. The 78 Megawatt-peak (MWp) project integrates solar photovoltaics (PV) with 7.8 Megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage systems, which will beef up the power grid’s resilience during high electricity demand. To enhance the system’s performance in the long run, SP will also implement digital management solutions to optimise solar energy generation and yield using comprehensive insights and data.
